Douglas Eugene Smith, age 74, of Woodrun on Tillery, Mt. Gilead, passed away Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Carolinas Medical Center, Northeast, Concord, NC.
Mr. Smith was born September 9, 1942 at Charlotte, NC, the son of Richard and Wilma Manus Smith, both of whom preceded him in death.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Troy, a retired deputy with twenty years of service at the Union County Sheriff's Department and a US Army veteran. He loved the military, and was a supporter of the Wounded Warrior Foundation and the USO. He also enjoyed collecting antiques and refinishing wood.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Phyllis Smith of the home; one daughter, Beth Smith of Kannapolis; one son, Douglas Andrew Smith of Brandon, FL; one granddaughter, Lindsey Kerley of Kannapolis; one sister, Elaine S. Reid of Asheboro; one nephew, Rich Reid of Asheboro. In addition to his family members, he is survived by his two canine companions, Barney and Chloe.
The family will receive friends Thursday, April 6, from 12:30 pm – 1:45 pm in the chapel of First Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow in the church sanctuary at 2:00 pm with Pastor Ed Lowder and Dr. Phillips McRae officiating. Burial will be in Stanly Gardens of Memory, Albemarle.
